I continue to believe there is social design gold in the work of Alexander.
I'd love to hear Alexander discuss this with Jeff Hawkins. Hawkins is the author of On Intelligence. He's also one of folks behind Palm Pilots, and appears to spend a lot of his time thinking about how brains work. Hawkins has some fascinating ideas about the cortex and it's hierarchical ordering capabilities. Be interesting to see if they'd find some common ground.
